How to Make Textured Wall Art – The Affordable and Easy Way

If you’re craving a bold, beautiful art moment on your walls but don’t want to spend a fortune. extured art has been one of my favorite things to create because it’s simple, impactful, and gives a custom, high-end look. Whether your walls are feeling a little bare or you just want something unique, this DIY is both affordable and beginner-friendly.

Let me walk you through the exact steps to create your own minimalist piece using just a few materials.

Supplies You'll Need:

Step-by-Step: How to Make Textured Wall Art

1. Prep Your Workspace

Lay something underneath your canvas to protect your table or floor. I used a piece of wood, but you can use an old towel, silicone mat or cardboard. Set your canvas on top.

2. Apply the Spackle

Scoop out a moderate amount of spackle using a spatula and place it on the canvas. Begin spreading it in different directions—this part is totally up to you. Create swirls, curves, or smooth lines. Just be quick because spackle dries fast!

3. Add Texture (Optional)

I used a 4x4 inch square-notch spreader to add even more dimension. Each edge creates a different effect—so play around! The beauty of this step is that there's no “right way.”

Let the texture dry completely overnight.

4. Paint It Your Way

Once dry, take a paintbrush and coat the surface with your favorite paint. I used leftover sample paint a friend gave me (zero dollars spent!). Pro tip: Paint in one direction—it’s easier when working over texture.

Let it dry overnight again. You can do 1–2 coats depending on the look you’re going for.

5. Frame It (Optional but Elevated)

To make it look like a finished piece of art, I framed mine in a custom gold wood frame and secured it with four L-brackets. What I love about this method is it makes it easy to switch out the art in the future without committing permanently.

The Result

Your finished art will look elegant, high-end, and completely one-of-a-kind. And the best part? You made it yourself—with just a few materials and your creative spark.

Whether you hang it in your living room, bedroom, or hallway, this piece will add instant interest and texture to any space.
