How to Create a Room Inspiration Board Using Pinterest

Creating a beautiful room always starts with a clear vision. Whether you're planning a full makeover or just want to refresh a space, one of the best tools you can use is Pinterest. It’s free, visual, and perfect for collecting and organizing inspiration before you shop or start decorating.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to create a Pinterest room inspiration board that reflects your style and sets the tone for your space. I’ve also included a video tutorial to show you exactly how to create and organize your board step by step!

Step 1: Choose the Room You Want to Focus On

Before opening Pinterest, get clear on which room you're decorating. Is it your bedroom, living room, office, or entryway? Having a specific room in mind will help you stay focused and curate images with purpose.

Pro Tip: You can repeat this process for every room in your home—just create a separate board for each one!

Step 2: Define the Mood You Want to Feel in the Space

Ask yourself:

  • How do I want to feel when I walk into this room?

  • Calm? Energized? Cozy? Inspired?

  • What colors or textures help bring that feeling to life?

The mood will guide your selections, helping you choose images that align emotionally with your space.

Step 3: Identify Your Favorite Design Style(s)

Are you drawn to Modern Organic? Coastal? Boho? Minimalist? Transitional?

Even if you aren’t sure of the exact name, noticing recurring patterns (wood tones, clean lines, natural textures, bold color, etc.) in what you love will help shape the overall look of your board.

Step 4: Start Pinning to a Dedicated Pinterest Board

Now that you know the room, mood, and style, you’re ready to open Pinterest and:

  1. Create a new board and name it after your project (e.g., “Serene Guest Bedroom” or “Modern Living Room”).

  2. Start pinning images that speak to the look, feel, and function of your space.

  3. Don’t just pin finished rooms—include furniture, color palettes, textures, decor ideas, and even lighting inspiration.

Step 5: Organize Your Pins into Sections

This is one of the most powerful (but underused) Pinterest features!

You can create sections within your board to sort inspiration by category. For example:

  • Furniture

  • Wall Colors

  • Layouts

  • Lighting

  • Decor

  • Art & Mirrors

  • Window Treatments

This makes it easier to reference later when you’re shopping or creating a mood board.

Pinterest is more than a place to collect pretty photos—it’s a powerful visual tool to clarify your style and guide your decorating decisions. By creating an organized inspiration board with intention, you’ll feel more confident and aligned when it’s time to bring your space to life. So grab your device, make yourself a cozy drink, and start building your vision!
