How to Quickly Transform Glass Into a Mirror In 4 Steps
Skill Level: Easy
Perfect for: Beginners
Looking for a fun and easy DIY that adds beauty and function to your space? Let me introduce you to one of my favorite quick projects: turning a simple piece of clear glass into a mirror using spray paint. Yep, spray paint!
Whether you're upcycling an old picture frame or just want to add a creative twist to your gallery wall, this project is an affordable way to create something stylish and completely custom. The best part? You can finish it in under an hour!
✨ Supplies You’ll Need:
Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect Spray (Make sure it’s for clear glass to mirror)
Picture frame with a glass front (it doesn’t have to be in a frame)
Rubbing alcohol or vinegar + water (for cleaning)
Optional: Chalkola Markers or dry-erase markers if you want to write on it later!
Step-by-Step Process
1. Gather Supplies + Prep Your Area
Pick a well-ventilated space or head outside. Spray paint fumes can be strong, so make sure there's airflow!
2. Disassemble Your Frame
Remove the glass and backing from the picture frame. Set aside the frame and backing for later.
3. Clean Your Glass
Use rubbing alcohol or vinegar mixed with water to clean the glass thoroughly. Any smudges or dust can affect the final finish, so take your time here.
4. Read + Shake That Can
Grab your Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect spray and give it a good shake for at least 1 minute. Don’t skip reading the directions on the can—every brand has its quirks.
5. Spray the Glass (Back Side Only)
Place the glass flat with the side you want mirrored facing down.
Hold the can 8–10 inches away and spray in slow, even, light coats. Let each coat dry 1 minute between layers. I used 5 coats for a nice, even mirror effect.
Let the final layer dry for at least 10 minutes before handling.
6. Reassemble + Reveal
Once dry, place the glass painted side down into your frame. Add the backing and close it up. Flip it over and... voila! You’ve made your own mirror!
💡 Bonus Idea: Turn It Into an Inspiration Board
If you don’t need a traditional mirror, use Chalkola markers or dry-erase markers to turn it into a message board. Write affirmations, love notes, to-dos, or daily intentions. Just wipe clean and update as often as you want!
Why You'll Love This Project:
It’s budget-friendly
You can customize the frame and size
It doubles as decor + functional art
Makes a great personalized gift
