Easy DIY Wall Art with Painter’s Tape
Sometimes the most beautiful art pieces come from simple techniques and a little creativity. This project is one of my favorites because it’s affordable, beginner-friendly, and makes a bold statement on your wall. I call this piece “Broken Pieces” because the geometric shapes created by the painter’s tape look like shattered pieces breaking away.
Here’s how you can recreate it (or make it your own!) with just a few supplies.
What You’ll Need
Cup of water (to thin paint)
Clear acrylic spray sealant (protectant)
Step 1: Paint Your Base Layer
Start by painting your entire canvas black. I used a sponge brush, but a regular paint brush works just as well. Adding a small amount of water to your black paint will help it glide on smoothly and create even coverage.
Let this layer dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Add Painter’s Tape
Once the base layer is dry, use painter’s tape to create abstract shapes and geometric patterns. There’s no right or wrong here—have fun with it! Try diagonal lines, triangles, or random shapes to give it that shattered effect.
Step 3: Paint the Top Layer
Using your white acrylic paint, paint over the entire canvas, covering both the black background and painter’s tape. You can use your sponge brush or paintbrush for this step.
Step 4: Reveal Your Design
Before the white paint fully dries, carefully peel off the painter’s tape. This will reveal crisp, clean black lines underneath, creating a striking contrast.
Step 5: Protect and Display
After your artwork is fully dry, spray a clear acrylic protectant over the surface. This will seal the paint, protect it from dust, and give your piece a polished look.
Once sealed, hang your artwork proudly on your wall and enjoy your masterpiece!
This project is proof that you don’t need to be a professional artist to create stunning wall art. With only two paint colors and some painter’s tape, you can achieve a modern, abstract piece that feels custom and high-end. It’s a simple way to add personality to your space while embracing your creative side.
✨ Creative Challenge: Try this technique using different color combinations—like gold on navy, blush on cream, or even bold neon shades. Give your piece a unique name that reflects your vision.
