DIY Cricut Mug Press Tutorial – Start to Finish (Beginner Friendly)

If you’ve ever wanted to create professional-looking custom mugs that can be used every day (or given as thoughtful handmade gifts), the Cricut Mug Press makes it surprisingly simple. Whether you’re a beginner or just need an easy holiday or birthday gift idea, this step-by-step tutorial will walk you through the process from start to finish.

Mugs make great gifts for coffee lovers, tea drinkers, or anyone who enjoys a personalized touch. Plus, with Cricut’s Infusible Ink sheets, the designs look vibrant and polished—and they’re dishwasher safe.

Why Custom Mugs Make the Perfect Gift

Finding unique gifts can sometimes feel impossible—especially for people who already seem to have everything. That’s why I love giving gifts that I’ve created myself. They’re thoughtful, personal, and practical. A custom mug isn’t just decorative—it’s something your loved one will use every single day while being reminded of you.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Create Your Design in Design Space

Download Cricut Design Space from your computer or mobile app store. Once you’re signed in, search for “mug” in the projects section. You’ll find a wide range of ready-to-use designs (perfect if you don’t want to create your own from scratch).

👉 Pro Tip: Don’t forget to toggle the “Mirror” option on before cutting your design. This ensures your design transfers correctly to the mug.

Step 2: Cut Out Your Design

Place your Infusible Ink sheet shiny-side down on the cutting mat. Select Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet as your material setting in Design Space. Adjust the pressure (I like to use “More” for clean cuts).

Load the mat into your Cricut machine, click Go, and let it cut your design. Once it’s done, unload the mat and carefully weed away any parts of the design you don’t want to transfer.

Step 3: Apply and Press

Take a Cricut blank mug and wrap your design around it. Use heat-resistant tape to hold everything in place. Make sure it’s centered exactly how you want it.

Turn on your Cricut Mug Press, wait until the light turns green, then carefully insert your mug. Lower the lever to start the transfer process. Once all the dots on the machine light up, it’s time to remove your mug.

Be careful—it will be hot! Only touch the handle and place it on a heat mat until it cools completely (about 30 minutes).

Step 4: Reveal Your Masterpiece

Once the mug is cool, peel away the transfer sheet to reveal your design. The finished result looks crisp, professional, and totally custom.

This DIY is all about creativity made simple. With just a few steps, you can create a gift that’s personal, practical, and looks like it came from a store. That’s the beauty of crafting with Cricut—it takes your creativity and transforms it into something you (and others) can enjoy every day.

Creative Challenge: Try making a set of mugs this week—one for yourself and one to gift. Play around with seasonal designs, quotes, or patterns that reflect your personality.
