Make Stunning DIY Ceramic-Style Bowls in Just 2 Hours (No Kiln Needed!)

Ever wished you could whip up your own chic little bowls or cups—without a pottery wheel or a week-long wait? Say hello to resin casting powder: the not-so-secret shortcut to creating pieces that look and feel like real ceramics, in just two hours. Trust me, once you try this, you’ll want to make a dozen. It’s fast, fun, and totally beginner-friendly.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing weekend project, handmade gift idea, or a new creative side hustle, this one’s for you.

Remember that feeling from art class, hands deep in clay, fully focused and relaxed? This project gives you that same “maker’s high.” It’s the joy of creating something tangible, useful, and beautiful—with your own two hands. And there’s nothing like unmolding that first piece and thinking: “Wait... I made this?!”

Skill Level: Beginner-Friendly

No fancy tools, no kiln, no prior experience needed. If you can measure and stir, you can do this! Just follow the right ratio and safety tips.

Why You'll Love This Project:

  • Fast results: Sets and cures in just 2 hours.

  • Therapeutic + creative: Like a mini pottery class at home—minus the mess and cost.

  • Chic + functional: These bowls look ceramic, but are lighter and easier to make.

  • Endlessly customizable: Paint them however you like—minimalist, colorful, or marbled.

  • Giftable + sellable: Perfect for birthdays, markets, or launching your own candle line.

Supplies You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Safety first: Put on your gloves and mask. The powder is fine and shouldn’t be inhaled.

  2. Measure your mix: Use a food scale to measure a 3:1 ratio of powder to water. Accuracy is key for a smooth pour. Please follow the directions provided on the package.

  3. Mix well: Stir until smooth with no lumps—about 2 minutes.

  4. Pour into molds: Slowly pour into your silicone molds. Tap lightly to remove bubbles.

  5. Let it cure: Wait about 2.5 hours. You’ll know it’s ready when the mold feels cool and firm to the touch. I tend to wait until the next day to before removing it from the mold.

  6. Demold + decorate: Carefully remove your new bowl or cup. Paint them a design and color of your choice or leave it as is. Want a glossy or protective finish? Add a clear varnish.

  7. (Optional) Seal for candles: If you’re using the bowl as a candle base, seal it fully with heat-safe varnish to prevent wax seepage.

  8. Pour in the candle sand and even it out. Place either 1 or 2 wicks in. I recommend cutting 1 of the wicks in half and then placing it inside the sand.
